Mary of the Day (March 26) – MADONNA DEL PIANO – APPARITION of BIANZONE – SONDRIO

The sanctuary, located in the middle Valtellina, among apple orchards and terraced vineyards, can be reached by train, bus or private vehicle and is open on public holidays for Holy Mass. It has probably a medieval origins due to popular devotion, but rose as a sanctuary in 1675 following the apparition of the Madonna (March 26) to a local man. He reported that the Virgin asked to:

“to raise an altar and rebuilt to a more honorable state, my temple located here on this site”.
The work of reconstruction and embellishment lasted several years because it was not continuous and continued even in the eighteenth century.

On the eve of the Feast of the Assumption of 1870, the sanctuary, which has always been threatened by the river Valle, was invaded by water and debris: the gates were broken and mud, boulders and trees ended outside and inside the church. The statue of the Madonna was found intact in the sacristy. From that day on, the church remained closed to worship. After the Second World War the shrine gradually lost interest and in 1961 was devastated by an unknown person who removed the statue of the Madonna.
Now the church has risen with its beautiful architectural structure, restored and reopened to worship in the presence of S.E. the Bishop on 22 September 1985. (See below a documentary in italian of the sanctuary)
